Unpopular Opinion Time

So I watched “War Horse” yesterday (and I won’t get into how ridiculous it is, that the movie’s called “Companions” in German cause they never get the titles right) and I wonder if I’ve watched a different movie than everyone on tumblr.

Maybe I had too high expectations after all the flailing on tumblr and a total of six oscar nominations but…what the hell? It’s nothing new that horses in movies constantly rear and whine, it just seems to be what non equestrians think horses do, but did Joey ever do anything else? And whoever was standing out of shot telling him what to do was doing a pretty poor job. The horse’s reactions to a bucket of food for example were way too fast, like someone was fastfowarding through the scene. And just overall I never thought it was timed right or the appropriate reaction, not even cinematically as in underlining the heartbreaking moment.

And the beginning? Oh yeah mother and son just happily gallop around all day long and when momma paws the ground, son doesn’t take an apple from the boy, cause that’s so what horses do. Let me just face palm here for a second *facepalm*

Also? I never knew that there is no visible difference between a yearling and a grown horse cause I could’ve sworn Joey looked pretty much the same on the market as he did later on except maybe a few more muscles.

It’s sad cause I thought the idea behind the movie was a really good one but the execution, to me, could’ve been a lot better. Overall I snorted and facepalmed more about the more often ridiculous than accurate portrayal of horses than anything (but yes at the end, I couldn’t help myself, they were just pulling every trick in the book to get some tears, who can resist that?)

On the bright side, I didn’t get into the dilemma of deciding whether I stick with Secretariat for my favorite horse movie or replacing it with the a newer model. I’d really like to take Spielberg by the hand and make him spend a day at the barn.

And now please excuse me, I gotta go fetch my pony cause why waste money on the barn when it can easily live in my room? Movies taught me so!
